Maybe, but not everyone WANTS to watch ground-grappling, and the quality of takedowns in BJJ is often terrible by comparison. There’s nothing like a big throw for excitement.

Still – I think many would agree. I think there is a big percentage of judo fans who do want to see quality judo newaza but that’s not going to happen with referees like here.

Poorly reffed match (stopped them when the TAJ guy was initiating a good choke) at least the best guy won.

It was not just the choke. There was also a decent armlock attempt by the belgian, and an attempted turn by the tajik, that were both stopped by the referee for no reason at all. This is simply not judo anymore. It is definitely not the judo of old legends like Kimura and Otani. Judo have turned into a throws only competition with just a theoretical option to win by submission. Submissions are definitely just as beautiful to watch as a good throw.

I don’t know what the hell the IJF thinks it is doing, but in my opinion they are turning the sport into something that is only interesting to other olympic competition oriented judokas. I actually think that the local amateur level judo competitions I watch, are more interesting to see than this. Ippons are ippons and the fight is allowed to continue on the ground.

Not sure I understood everything in the first german comment, but I tend to agree that BJJ are taking over for a reason. In fact, I would almost say that BJJ is becoming the “real” judo, but with mediocre takedown techniques to say the least (morote gari or just willingly laying down on the back and “pull guard”).

I agree with “Swedish judoka”. One most not forget that Judo is a martial art. The more the IJF leaves that philosophy and make it a “sport” the more they change what Judo initially was intended to be. Judo is among the most effective martial arts, but the most stupid thing in Judo (thanks to the rules) is that you can lay flat on your stomach without any consequence, in a real combat situation that is the sam as suicide.
