In 1952, the 1st Pan-American Superior Judo Championship was conducted in the Havana, Cuba. The championship was organized by the Panamerican Judo Union. The categories were divided by grades (DANES) and classes (KYU) disregarding the weight of participants. Pan-American Judo was exclusively for men, until 1980, when the Pan-American Judo Union officially introduced the female judo during the XII Pan-American Judo Championship in the city of Asuncion, Isla Margarita, Venezuela, what made it the 1st Pan-American Judo Championship for Women.
